As Costs Surge for Iowans, Vance and Nunn Ask for More
Vice President JD Vance visits Iowa to fundraise for Rep. Zach Nunn as families face rising costs tied to their policies
DES MOINES, IA — As Iowans continue to face rising costs for gas, groceries, and everyday essentials, Vice President JD Vance visited Iowa today to fundraise for Rep. Zach Nunn, asking Iowans to give more while they’re already being forced to pay more.
Ahead of the visit, Iowans delivered birthday cards to Nunn’s Des Moines office with messages for their congressman. Messages covered a wide array of topics, all centered on policies and decisions Nunn has supported, contrary to his constituents' needs. From tariffs that have raised prices on everyday goods to support for a costly war driving up fuel prices, these decisions are hitting working Iowans directly. Nunn has supported cuts to programs like Medicaid and SNAP and was did not act quickly enough to keep the Affordable Care Act tax credits, stripping thousands of Iowans of coverage moves that have made it harder for families to afford health care and put food on the table. Together, these policies have created a perfect storm for Iowa households already struggling to keep up.
Matt, a constituent in Nunn’s district, spoke about the difficult choices Iowans have to make facing rising costs across the board. “The mortgage or rent eats first, and that leaves budgets tight for many, leading to tough or impossible decisions to be made,” said Matt. “Rationing health care, keeping homes barely tolerable to cut utility costs, skipping meals, some may get second or third jobs, and then you have to factor in higher childcare costs. These things are not luxuries, we have working people in this country that are unhoused. With the way things are headed, thanks to Nunn’s votes in Congress, more people are going to be in these situations, and more families are going to struggle while making these impossible decisions to stay afloat.”
Today’s visit underscores a growing disconnect between Rep. Zach Nunn and the people he represents. Instead of focusing on lowering costs or addressing the challenges Iowans are facing, Vance’s trip is centered on his fundraising and political gain.
“Iowans are being squeezed from every direction: higher gas prices, rising costs, and economic uncertainty driven by the Trump-Vance administration’s policies Zach Nunn has supported, all the while prioritizing the pocketbooks of billionaires and corporations” said Mazie Stilwell executive director of Progress Iowa. “Now JD Vance is here asking them to open their wallets again. It’s hard to imagine a clearer example of whose side they’re on, and it’s not Iowans.”
