FACT CHECK: Miller-Meeks’ new ad tries to rewrite her record on health care

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks is airing a new ad claiming she'll stand up to insurance companies — but Iowans deserve to know the truth: she's voted to cut their health care and raise prices at every step.

  • Miller-Meeks voted for the Republican Tax Law which includes the largest cuts ever made to Medicaid and raised health care costs for tens of thousands of Iowans.

  • After voting to cut cost-lowering health care tax credits, Miller-Meeks dismissed the burden of rising health care costs, saying Iowans should have "some skin in the game" and be incentivized to stay healthier and not “overutilize” health care.

  • Miller-Meeks has taken more than $450,000 from the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries

  • Earlier this year she was exposed for renting a D.C. apartment from two lobbyists whose firm made millions working for PhRMA — all while Miller-Meeks sat on a subcommittee overseeing drug pricing.

  • Miller-Meeks voted against capping insulin prices on the same day she took money from an insulin manufacturer. Iowans with diabetes were paying the price while she cashed their checks.

  • While Miller-Meeks was fighting against health care tax credits for Iowa families, she was simultaneously taking tens of thousands of dollars from health insurance companies.

“Iowans who will lose their Medicaid and are dropping their ACA marketplace insurance thanks to historic cuts Miller-Meeks voted for will get sick and die,” Mazie Stilwell, executive director of Progress Iowa said. “Insurance companies are raising prices on everyone else, while pocketing the corporate tax breaks Miller-Meeks voted to make permanent.”
