Iowa’s Reps. don’t need another leg up while Iowans struggle to make ends meet

Mike Johnson supports Congressional raises while Republicans vote to raise costs for working people

A clip from last year has now gone viral featuring Speaker Mike Johnson admitting what working Iowans have suspected all along: Republican Washington insiders believe they deserve special privileges that ordinary Americans don't get.

While Representatives Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks voted for the Republican Tax Law which cuts programs that keep families afloat, their party boss in the Speaker's chair says members of Congress need access to insider trading just to "take care of their family.”

Nunn and Miller-Meeks both receive an annual congressional base salary of $174,000, more than double the median income in either of their districts. Meanwhile gas prices have topped $4 in all 50 states and Iowa families are stretching every paycheck to put food on the table. Republicans in Congress don’t need a raise or the ability to game the system with insider trading, they need to work to lower costs for Iowans.

Matt, a constituent of Nunn’s in Waukee, said that he’s disappointed in the lack of leadership being shown by Iowa’s members of Congress.

“We need our representatives to take action in order to bring costs down, that would be real leadership,” Matt said. “Costs are really ramping up right now, from gas and groceries to utility bills, we are all feeling the squeeze. We need Zach Nunn to speak up and be a leader to put a stop to rising costs.”
