Labor Luncheon with Mitch Landrieu: Republican Policies Hurt Working Families

Today, Mitch Landrieu, former White House Infrastructure Coordinator and Mayor of New Orleans, spoke at a labor luncheon in Des Moines hosted by Progress Iowa, Fairness for Iowa, Iowa Citizen Action Network (ICAN), The Working Class Project, Iowa Main Street Alliance, Unrig Our Economy and Health Care for America NOW - Iowa.

The event brought together retired laborers, union members and working families to discuss how the Republican Tax Law, supported by Congressman Zach Nunn, is driving up prices and cutting healthcare and food assistance to provide tax breaks to billionaires and corporations. Landrieu currently leads The Working Class Project, one of the largest investments currently underway to listen to and understand working-class voters, and serves as co-chair of American Bridge 21st Century.

Landrieu pointed out how quickly Republicans betrayed workers to bend for Trump by supporting tariffs and voting to cut vital programs like Medicaid and SNAP to fund tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy.

“The President used his power through reconciliation to hurt working families, because he’s got a malleable Congress,” Landrieu said. “Grassley, Ernst and Nunn voted for a bill that hurts Iowans, that takes food and health care away from working-class people to give another tax break to the ultra-wealthy. When you add up tariffs, these cuts, the loss of jobs and raising prices for everyone, this economy is going to get worse for working people.”
