Medicaid Awareness Month Highlights Devastating Cuts Backed by Miller-Meeks

As Iowans lose care, Miller-Meeks dismisses closures and leaves the door open to even more cuts to fund war

During Medicaid Awareness Month, Iowans are being reminded of just how critical the program is, and just how much is at risk because of decisions made by Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Republicans in Congress.

Last year, Rep. Miller-Meeks voted for the largest cuts to Medicaid in history, a move that has already put pressure on rural hospitals and clinics across Iowa, forcing closures and disrupting care. Now, as Congressional Republicans consider even more Medicaid cuts to help fund a war with Iran, Rep. Miller-Meeks is refusing to rule them out, putting more Iowa families’ access to care even further at risk.

Iowa communities are already seeing the consequences. Hospitals and clinics across the country are closing or scaling back services, forcing patients to travel farther, wait longer, or go without care altogether, and Iowa is no different. When confronted with these closures, Rep. Miller-Meeks dismissed concerns, claiming these facilities were already having problems, a response that ignores the reality facing Iowa families and the role her own votes have played in making that situation worse.

At a time when Iowans are struggling to afford care, that kind of response isn’t just out of touch, it’s unacceptable. Instead of working to protect access to health care, Miller-Meeks has prioritized tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy while backing deep cuts to Medicaid. Iowans are left asking a simple question: why is there always money for what Donald Trump wants, but never enough to make sure families can see a doctor?

Medicaid is a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of Iowans, including children, seniors, people with disabilities, veterans, and working families. Cuts of this scale don’t happen in a vacuum. They mean fewer services, overwhelmed providers, and more closures in the communities that can least afford to lose them.

“Mariannette Miller-Meeks voted to gut Medicaid in order to give tax cuts to the rich,” said Jonna, a Johnson County resident and Medicaid recipient. “Her vote will harm thousands of Iowans, who rely on Medicaid to provide medical care, respite for caregivers, prescriptions, and housing for our loved ones with disabilities. She has made it harder forIowans to care for our families in the future, but we'll keep doing it - unlike Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who doesn't care for Iowans.”

Medicaid Awareness Month should be a time to recognize the importance of this program. Instead, it is becoming a warning. If Rep. Miller-Meeks and Congressional Republicans continue down this path, more Iowans will lose access to care, more rural providers will disappear, and more families will be left to fend for themselves, all because their elected representative decided they weren’t a priority.
