Republicans Shut the Government Down Instead of Lowering Health Care Costs

Reps. Nunn and Miller-Meeks unwilling to show up, lower costs and avert a shutdown

The government shut down overnight as a direct result of Republicans in Congress, including Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn, refusal to extend health tax credits that keep health care premiums low for around 100,000 Iowans. Their decision to prioritize tax breaks for billionaires over the health and well-being of their constituents is a stark reminder of the GOP's misguided priorities.

The consequences of their policies are far-reaching. In addition to putting strain on Iowa’s healthcare system, their decision to shut down the government has many Iowans concerned about meeting everyday needs.

Robyn Agu is a host-home provider from Altoona, in Nunn’s district, and provides 24/7 care and a home for adults with severe disabilities.

“We are worried about services not being available during a government shutdown. Are disability checks going to come on time? Will Medicaid and Medicare coverage continue smoothly?” Agu said. “My health care is going to get more expensive, wait times are going to get longer, it hits from all angles. I, and all Iowans, need Rep. Nunn to stand up for vulnerable people and stop lining the pockets of billionaires and corporations.”
