Republicans’ Tariffs Continue to Fuel Inflation, Hurting Iowa Families
Republicans in Congress, Including Rep. Zach Nunn and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Enable Billionaire and Corporate Tax Breaks at the Expense of Everyday Iowans
Des Moines, Iowa – The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released yesterday shows that Republican-supported tariffs are continuing to drive up costs for Iowa families. The CPI for July reveals that the inflation rate is still unacceptably high, leaving many struggling to afford basic necessities.
Representatives Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, along with other Congressional Republicans, voted to support tariffs that have contributed to rising costs. Their actions are part of a broader agenda to provide tax breaks to billionaires and corporations, further exacerbating economic inequality. The impact of these tariffs is not just a national issue — it's being felt deeply in Iowa.
“Every dollar counts right now. Backpacks, shoes, healthy food, and after-school activities are getting harder to afford because of Donald Trump’s tariffs and Representative Miller-Meeks is standing behind them. I’m exhausted from trying to balance it all,” says Alexis Huscko, a Muscatine mother of two. “These tariffs are hitting Iowa families where it hurts. They are forcing parents like me to choose between our kids’ health, their education, and the activities that keep them thriving. Iowans deserve leaders who fight to make life easier, not policies that make it harder just to give our kids what they need.”
According to the latest data, tariffs are raising prices across the board, with some vital sectors facing steep rates. Used car and truck prices have risen, and fabric, clothing, and shoe prices are expected to surge as we head into the back-to-school shopping season.
