Supply Hive continues building community canning program in response to SNAP cuts and rising costs voted on by Nunn, Miller-Meeks

Last night, Supply Hive held their second in-person training on food preservation techniques co-hosted by Fairness for Iowa.

The training is part of Supply Hive’s Summer Food Preservation Program, teaching volunteers how to help stretch fresh food donations further to feed more Iowans. The program will help combat rising costs and devastating SNAP cuts voted on by Iowa’s Congressional delegation in H.R. 1 last year

Zakariyah Hill, the executive director of the Supply Hive, said that the program exists to supplement other forms of food assistance with the ongoing surge in demand.

“Representatives Nunn and Miller-Meeks cut billions of dollars from SNAP to give billionaires a tax cut, support a war that’s driving up gas and grocery costs, and voted for cost-raising tariffs— and it’s Iowans paying the price,” Hill said. “We are happy to step in and help as much as possible, but we deserve Members of Congress who will bring down costs and help their constituents put food on the table instead of giving more tax breaks to the wealthy.”

Over 25 members of the community attended the training, learned canning techniques and preserved carrots, onions and potatoes to help keep Supply Hive’s shelves stocked after the summer ends.

As previously reported by Channel 5 News in Des Moines, the program teaches individuals how to produce from community gardens and farms throughout the summer harvest. By supporting those learning to can and providing extra stock in the winter months for community pantries and fridges, Supply Hive is teaching Iowans how to can to combat cuts to SNAP and rising food prices.
