Tax Day reality: Nunn and Miller-Meeks voted for tax law that hurts working Iowans

On this Tax Day, working families across Iowa are facing a harsh reality: Representatives Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks voted for the Republican Tax Law that made historic cuts to health care and food assistance programs to pay for billionaire tax breaks.

Now, Republicans in Congress are pushing for a vote to reaffirm support for these cuts. While Nunn and Miller-Meeks tout their tax law as a win for working families, reporting from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities shows the truth:

On top of all of that, any small increase in tax returns to working Iowans is vastly overshadowed by rising costs due to tariffs, higher health care premiums and inflation caused by the war with Iran. In Iowa, the average price for gas is $3.65 a gallon as of April 15, 2026. Iowans are also facing an onslaught of layoffs in health care and manufacturing and cuts to available medical services. All caused by policies Nunn and Miller-Meeks have supported and voted for in order to give large permanent tax breaks to billionaires.

Anne Discher, executive director of Common Good Iowa, said that a majority of Iowans won’t have any big surprises in their returns this year.

“There’s little doubt that rich folks and large, profitable corporations are celebrating this Tax Day — but for the rest of us, there’s not much to celebrate,” Discher said. “As Congress and the President have showered big tax cuts on the folks who need help the least, their policies have raised prices for gas, health care and household goods and cut help for Iowans struggling to put food on the table. Iowans want their communities to remain strong and resilient, and they understand their civic responsibility to contribute. They just expect everyone to do their part.”

Mazie Stilwell, executive director of Progress Iowa, called out Iowa’s Reps. ahead of the vote.

"Instead of using their time in Congress to lower costs and make life better for working Iowans, Representatives Nunn and Miller-Meeks are holding this meaningless vote just to pat themselves on the back for making things worse," Stilwell said. "While they're busy celebrating a tax law that slashed health care, cut food assistance, and gave permanent breaks to billionaires, Iowans are getting hammered by $3.65 gas, layoffs, and skyrocketing insurance premiums. Working families don't need to be shown a victory lap, they need their representatives to actually fight for them."
