Constituent demands finally break through, Congressman Nunn votes to bring back health care tax credits after he let costs skyrocket

Today, after sustained pressure from constituents, Congressman Zach Nunn voted to bring back tax credits that help thousands of Iowans afford health care after letting costs increase drastically.

While a testament to the work constituents put in – speaking out and showing up for months urging their representative to side with Iowa families over billionaires and wealthy corporations – this vote doesn’t change the fact that Nunn has repeatedly voted to cut Medicaid funding and took part in causing the longest government shutdown in history in order to prevent affordable health care. Republicans in Congress continue to prioritize tax breaks for billionaires over the health care needs of everyday Americans.

Lori Hunt, a cancer survivor from Des Moines, has called, written and shown up at Nunn’s office for months and earlier this week spoke in a press call about the importance of bringing back the tax credits, for her own health as well as the thousands of other Iowans that are facing impossible decisions.

“So many spent months scrambling, not knowing what to do, some have even already signed up for higher premiums in order to be insured at the start of the year,” Hunt said. “I’m disappointed in Rep. Nunn because he and Republicans in Congress have had a whole year to work on this and while this one vote is in our favor, it isn’t a done deal yet and doesn’t change the other ways they have made health care inaccessible to so many Iowans.”
