Food-a-Palooza: A Food Drive Event In Response to Zach Nunn Raising Food Costs and Cutting Food Stamps
On Saturday, Fairness for Iowa and The Supply Hive hosted Food-a-Palooza, a food drive with carnival games, in Des Moines. Fairness for Iowa donated $750 to The Supply Hive and attendees brought food donations.
The event was held to raise awareness about the 23,000 Iowans at immediate risk of losing their SNAP benefits as a result of the Republican Tax Law. Representative Zach Nunn voted for the Republican Tax Law, which makes devastating cuts to SNAP and other programs that help feed hungry Iowans. This adds to the already overwhelming burden of increasing prices caused by tariffs, which Representative Nunn also voted for.
“In recent years, the demand on food pantries has been increasing, even more now with tariffs,” Executive Director of the Supply Hive Zakariyah Hill said. “Restricting access to food, SNAP and WIC and other community resources is taking us back and not forward. Events like this are necessary now more than ever to call attention to food insecurity as these cuts are going to hit Iowans hard.”
