ICYMI: Zach Nunn Supports Unserious Proposal Instead of Securing Health Care for Iowans

Des Moines, Iowa – Rep. Zach Nunn is once again proving that his “support” for Iowans’ health care is little more than political theater. Earlier this year, Nunn failed to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health care tax credits and for 43 days refused to provide relief for families struggling to afford coverage during the longest government shutdown in history.

Now, Nunn has cosponsored a two-year extension that has only nine co-sponsors and appears likely to fail in Congress. Meanwhile, a discharge petition, supported by 214 lawmakers, would extend the credits for three years, a step toward permanent relief. Iowans need the stability and assurance of a full three years of tax credits to afford their health insurance. With only four more signatures needed on the discharge petition, Zach Nunn could still choose to support extending the tax credits by joining members across the aisle and supporting a bipartisan effort to deliver affordable health care for everyday Iowans.

“Iowans called on Nunn to lower costs and he called them 'unserious'.” Mazie Stilwell, executive director of Progress Iowa said. “He could push real relief across the finish line by supporting a permanent extension, or take a step in the right direction by signing the ACA discharge petition. Instead, he is taking cover under a Republican plan he knows his colleagues don't take seriously. He could lower costs, instead he's playing politics and lobbing insults at his constituents.”

“Republicans have done nothing all year to secure affordable health care for families. Nunn’s flip-flop highlights a troubling pattern: look busy, do nothing, and hope no one notices the damage to Iowans’ health care.”
