Iowans Speak Out on Health Care Costs, Affordability at Davenport Town Hall with Rep. Eric Sorensen
DAVENPORT, IA — With Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks continuing to avoid accessible public forums across Iowa’s First Congressional District, Iowans gathered Saturday in Davenport for a town hall focused on rising costs and access to affordable health care coverage.
Hosted by Fairness for Iowa, the event brought together community members for an open conversation with U.S. Representative Eric Sorensen of Illinois’s 17th Congressional District, offering the kind of direct dialogue many attendees said has been missing from their own representation in Congress. Rep. Sorenson engaged directly with attendees on affordability, health care, and the pressures facing working families in the Midwest.
Participants raised concerns about rising costs, access to affordable health care, and the need for elected officials to listen to the real-life experiences of the people they serve. Several attendees spoke about the impact of Rep. Miller-Meek’s recent votes in Congress, including the refusal to bring back the Affordable Care Act health care tax credits, coupled with the lack of opportunities to ask her questions directly.
Rep. Sorensen emphasized the importance of accessibility and affordability, noting that communities across the Midwest are facing the same pressures, from higher health care costs to everyday expenses stretching family budgets.
“When families are struggling to afford health care and keep up with rising costs, it doesn’t stop at a district line,” said Congressman Eric Sorensen. “Davenport is just down the road from the communities I represent, and people across the Midwest are dealing with the same pressures. Showing up, listening, and having these conversations is part of the job—and it’s what people deserve from their elected officials.”
Attendees were invited to submit questions in advance and speak directly during the event, a format many said stood in sharp contrast to Rep. Miller-Meeks’ continued absence from public town halls in the district.
"Everyday costs are higher, groceries and basic necessities are less affordable, especially skyrocketing healthcare costs,” said Jay Williams, a Bettendorf resident. “She let health care tax credits expire while supporting even more tax breaks for billionaires! On top of that, Rep. Miller-Meeks voted to cut Medicaid, which our family relies on for our grandson’s care, and somehow she can’t even manage to show up in person to listen to her constituents, many of whom are in the same situation. It’s unbelievably frustrating to have our real needs ignored by a Congresswoman who would rather flip off Iowans opposing a Trump rally than sit down and hear our concerns. Today, I finally had a chance to be heard. ”
Fairness for Iowa organizers said the strong turnout underscores a growing demand for transparency, accountability, and action on affordability from Iowa’s First District representative, as families struggle with rising health care and everyday costs.
