Nunn & Miller-Meeks call increasing annual death rate in Iowa "compassionate"
June 27, 2025
Des Moines, IA - This week, Representatives Marianette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn signed a letter with 14 other House Republicans claiming that they wouldn’t support the Senate’s version of devastating Medicaid cuts.
In the letter, Nunn and Miller-Meeks doubled down on the House version they voted for, by calling it “compassionate.” Their bill would take healthcare away from 106,781 Iowans and could lead to the deaths of 116 additional Iowans every year.
The move is insulting to Iowans who know how deadly the GOP Tax Scam, passed by Nunn & Miller-Meeks, will be for the state and nation, including Progress Iowa Executive Director Mazie Stilwell.
"In what world is ripping healthcare away from a hundred thousand Iowans compassionate? Nunn and Miller-Meeks know their bill will hurt and even kill Iowans, but they voted for it anyway, taking healthcare away from their constituents to give the wealthiest Americans more tax breaks,” Stilwell said. “There's no compassion or kindness in any version of the GOP Tax Scam. Instead of hurting Medicaid recipients, the Senate should kill the bill, and Representatives Nunn and Miller-Meeks should oppose any and all Medicaid cuts going forward. It's time they focus on helping working families, and lower costs as they promised."
