Nunn Votes to Cut Food Stamps

Late last night, Congressman Zach Nunn voted to rip food stamps from hungry Iowans, even families with children. The two-day meeting of the House Agriculture Committee was spent reviewing their provisions for the Republican tax plan that would cut almost $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)—taking food from children, working families, seniors, and veterans in order to fund tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations.

Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman responded to the committee vote:

“Congressman Nunn’s vote to cut SNAP is an insult to Iowans.  He voted to cut SNAP benefits for Iowans to fund more tax breaks for the rich. The majority of SNAP benefits go to children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. SNAP also keeps the next generation of farmers on the land and ensures that nutritious, Iowa-grown food reaches our communities. He also voted against restoring funds for local food going to schools and against reinstating funding for school meals. Nunn is helping wealthy corporations while hurting Iowa farmers, local grocery stores, and hungry Iowans. Taking food away from Iowans and increasing costs through Trump’s tariffs are things that don’t work for Iowans.”

Michaelyn Mankel, an organizer with Food & Water Watch responded to Congressman Nunn’s vote:

“Congressman Zach Nunn tries to smoke and mirror his way out of accountability when he comes back to Iowa, and refuses to meet with his constituents. Then he flies off to DC and advances legislation like this that will hurt working families, children, seniors, and veterans. There are thousands of hungry children in Iowa who rely on SNAP and Nunn fell in line with the GOP to scale up impoverishment and seize funds that feed kids to pay for tax cuts for  billionaires.”
