STATEMENT: Iowa’s Representatives must act now to protect health care and stop playing politics

With the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits set to expire in days, Iowans are demanding that Representatives Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks stop stalling and take real action to protect health care for working families, small business owners and rural communities.

The discharge petition that forces a vote on extending the health care tax credits for three years has enough signatures – and now Nunn and Miller-Meeks need to support extending the tax credits when this vote comes up on the floor. Yet Iowa’s Republican representatives continue to back proposals, like the bill being voted on today, that do nothing to lower costs, and let premiums skyrocket for everyday Iowans. Nunn and Miller-Meeks have already voted earlier this year to slash health care in order to give massive tax breaks to billionaires.

“This is not about politics — it’s about whether everyday Iowans can afford to see a doctor, small business owners can stay insured, and rural hospitals can keep their doors open,” Mazie Stilwell executive director of Progress Iowa said. “Representatives Nunn and Miller-Meeks could be the deciding votes that make this happen. It’s time they grow a spine instead of playing politics with their constituents’ lives.”
