Iowans tell Nunn and Miller-Meeks to vote ‘No’ on legislation that could endanger Social Security and Medicare

The U.S. House is preparing to vote on a dangerous piece of legislation that threatens Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits and other critical programs that Iowans rely on. This vote puts earned benefits and healthcare at risk — to double down on tax breaks for billionaires and war spending — by putting Medicare and Social Security on the chopping block when Republicans overspend elsewhere.

This wouldn’t be Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn’s first attack on Medicaid and Medicare. Last year, they both voted to cut Medicaid and Medicare in the Republican Tax Law to give tax breaks to the wealthy. That law slashed taxes for the wealthiest households while making deep cuts to health care and food assistance. This week’s vote comes at a time when President Trump and Republicans are spending over $1 billion every day on the largely unpopular war with Iran instead of addressing domestic issues, like rising grocery, and now gas, prices.

Kay Pence, the vice president of the Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans, said that many seniors in Iowa are already struggling to make ends meet with rising costs.

“Any cut to Social Security would be devastating to Iowans who rely on it,” Pence said. “Our representatives have done nothing to lower costs and in fact have raised costs on almost everything in the past year. I urge Iowa’s members of Congress to think about their constituents and vote against this legislation.”
