Nunn and Miller-Meeks vote to endanger Social Security and Medicare

Iowa’s Reps. continue to work against their constituents’ best interests

Today, Representatives Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks voted for a dangerous piece of legislation that threatens Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits and other critical programs that Iowans rely on. This vote puts earned benefits and healthcare at risk — to double down on tax breaks for billionaires and war spending — by putting Medicare and Social Security on the chopping block when Republicans overspend elsewhere.

This isn’t Nunn or Miller-Meeks’ first attack on Medicaid and Medicare. Last year, they both voted to cut Medicaid and Medicare in the Republican Tax Law to give tax breaks to the wealthy. That law slashed taxes for the wealthiest households while making deep cuts to health care and food assistance. This week’s vote comes at a time when President Trump and Republicans are spending over $1 billion every day on the largely unpopular war with Iran instead of addressing domestic issues, like rising grocery, and now gas, prices.

Peter, a retired Iowan in Des Moines, said he was beyond disappointed by Iowa’s representatives’ votes. “Representatives Nunn and Miller-Meeks know that it’s not possible to implement this legislation without hurting people tremendously, and they do it anyway,” Peter said. “Instead of threatening programs that everyday people rely on, like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, Republicans should demand that the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share in taxes to fund those programs.”
