Trump touts “winning” economy in speech today - but Iowans are losing with congressional Republicans economic policies
“I am not winning, and every time Iowans go to the grocery store and see their bill, I don’t think they feel like they are winning either.”
DES MOINES, IA — Today in Clive, President Trump gave remarks about “affordability” and painted an economic picture that doesn’t align with the reality for many Iowans.
In stark contrast to Trump’s remarks claiming that Iowa families are ‘winning’ in the current economy, a recently released report shows the true story for Iowa families. The report, issued by the bipartisan Cost Coalition, Progress Iowa, Fairness for Iowa, and other partners shows how the GOP’s reckless economic agenda is harming Iowans.
Iowa’s Representatives, Randy Feenstra, Zach Nunn, Ashley Hinson and Mariannette Miller-Meeks have all supported Trump’s chaotic economic agenda. From voting in support of tariffs, to ripping health care away from thousands of Iowans, all have refused to stand against policies that harm Iowa families – but had no problem passing massive, permanent tax breaks for corporations and billionaires.
No state has been in the crosshairs of the President’s economic agenda more than the Hawkeye State, where farmers are struggling with tariffs, manufacturing continues to suffer, and Iowans are losing access to health care due to recent cuts and rising prices.
One in eight Iowans are facing food insecurity, 100,000 Iowans are in danger of losing their health insurance, and electricity bills are spiking as families need to heat their homes at the peak of winter.
Peter Rose, a retiree in Des Moines, spoke at a press conference before Trump’s visit about the struggles of living on a fixed income in the current economy.
“I know I’m not alone in experiencing this, every purchase made whether it be groceries, repairs or any household item, the price has gone up,” Rose said. “Prices continue to rise due to an administration that doesn’t care and gets carte blanche approval from our congressional delegation. Every single one of them has supported these higher prices through tariffs and the terrible Republican Tax Law they passed. I will not sit quietly while Representative Nunn tells me that ‘tariffs are winning’. I am not winning, and every time Iowans go to the grocery store and see their bill, I don’t think they feel like they are winning either.”
Rose is featured in digital and TV ads that are part of Fairness for Iowa’s seven-figure ad campaign calling out Zach Nunn’s support of tariffs.
