ICYMI: Nunn doesn’t vote for healthy communities

Congressman Zach Nunn recently said in an interview that he believes a healthy community needs a good school, hospital and downtown.

His voting record shows that he doesn’t support health communities for the Iowans he represents:

A thriving downtown?

  • Nunn has consistently voted in support of tariffs that put strain on small businesses and leave Iowans with less spending money to support a strong downtown. [H.J.Res.72

    •  “I know I’m not alone in experiencing this, every purchase made whether it be groceries, repairs or any household item, the price has gone up. Prices continue to rise due to an administration that doesn’t care and gets carte blanche approval from our congressional delegation. Every single one of them has supported these higher prices through tariffs and the terrible Republican Tax Law they passed. I will not sit quietly while Representative Nunn tells me that ‘tariffs are winning’. I am not winning, and every time Iowans go to the grocery store and see their bill, I don’t think they feel like they are winning either.” - Peter Rose, retiree living in Des Moines who is so frustrated with Nunn’s support for tariffs he is sharing the impact of tariffs on his fixed income in ads across the district

  • Tariffs Nunn has supported have also caused layoffs leaving many Iowans out of a job, let alone the extra money to spend at the local bar.

    • “Trade policy needs to be carefully put together, and targeted, and thought out, and most importantly, made to protect and put workers first. Anything short of that is not a serious policy discussion." - Charlie Wishman,  the president of the Iowa Federation of Labor AFL-CIO

  • Farmers are also footing the bill for reckless tariffs that raise input costs and make it hard to sell their crop.

    • “It feels like everything is getting more and more expensive. Farmers are feeling the tariffs in our input costs and when we go to sell our crop, there’s no winning. It feels like Nunn has turned his back on us, the everyday people that he is supposed to represent.” - Dale Cline, retired postal worker and farmer from Creston

A good hospital?

  • Congressman Nunn voted for huge cuts to Medicaid, putting rural hospitals and clinics at risk of closure, and causing layoffs in health care across the state. [H.R.1]

    • “Stripping healthcare and food assistance from hardworking Iowans is devastating — especially in rural communities where hospitals depend on Medicaid to keep their doors open. This isn’t just bad policy, it’s a direct attack on the people our elected officials, including Reps. Nunn and Miller-Meeks, are supposed to represent.” - Matt Chapman, from Waukee

  • A MercyOne clinic in his district has already announced it will be closing this month.

    • MercyOne also had to lay off 67 workers in Des Moines and said in their statement that, “The recent and future government funding policy changes are projected to reduce Trinity Health’s annual revenue by $1.5 billion. Additionally, more reductions in coverage, payment and access to Medicaid and Medicare are being considered by the federal government. It is not possible to simply absorb such a significant financial impact.”

    • Fairness for Iowa put out ads on the layoffs and clinic closure, calling out Nunn for leaving Iowans ‘heartbroken’ during Valentine’s Day.

All of this to support tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations instead of supporting ‘health communities’ for the Iowans he represents.
